Use cases

Which light for which use case?

Every photography style has different requirements for light. Here you will find the tried and tested Walimex pro setups for the most common usage scenarios.

Scenario 01

Product photography

For sharp, reflection-controlled product shots with even lighting, a softbox setup with studio flash is recommended. A rectangular striplight softbox creates precise light along edges and surfaces.

Setup: Studio flash + stripbox or softbox + white reflector as brightener

Scenario 02

Portrait & People

Soft, flattering light for portraits is created with large Octagon softboxes. The large light diameter creates soft transitions and round catchlights in the eyes.

Setup: main light with octabox + second fill light with reflective umbrella

Scenario 03

Video production

Video shoots need flicker-free continuous light with adjustable color temperature. The bi-color lights allow quick adjustment to the ambient light - without color filters or gel.

Setup: Sirius 160 Bi-Color (key light) + Niova 150 Bi-Color (Backlight/Hair) + Rainbow RGBWW (accent light/background)

Scenario 04

Outdoor with daylight

Fill flash against harsh sun shadows requires high-speed sync to work with fast shutter speeds. The Mover TTL works without mains power – can be used anywhere.

Setup: Battery flash with high-speed sync + stripbox – useful when fast shutter speeds and mobility come together

Scenario 05

Food photography

Food photography thrives on natural, directed side light. A large softbox close to the subject creates the desired depth and texture. LED continuous light enables live view assessment before shooting.

Setup: Bi-color LED with softbox (side) + small brightening or white cardboard opposite

Scenario 06

Mode & Beauty

Fashion shoots need dynamic light with defined shadows. The Campaigner HS enables short exposure times even in outdoor light. Beauty Dishes create the characteristic, high-contrast “beauty light”.

Setup: Campaigner 600 HS + Beauty Dish (key light) + Stager 400 HSS + Striplight (rim light from behind)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Walimex pro

What is the difference between Walimex and Walimex pro?+

Walimex is intended for entry-level and basic equipment. Walimex pro is designed more for everyday studio use: repeatable processes, more robust components and a coherent accessory ecosystem. Flashes and softboxes use the same speedring system, so many light modifiers are compatible across both lines.

What do HSS and HS mean for studio flash?+

HS (High Speed) and HSS (High Speed Sync) refer to flash synchronization at shutter speeds above the camera's normal sync speed. This is useful for fill flash in daylight and for freezing fast movement.

Are Walimex pro softboxes compatible with other flash systems?+

Walimex pro offers softbox adapters for common flash systems, including Bowens/Aurora, Elinchrom, Broncolor, Profoto, Hensel, Multiblitz and the Walimex pro & K bayonet. The softboxes themselves are system-independent; only the speedring adapter has to fit the flash head.

Which softbox size is suitable for product photography?+

For product photography, the softbox should be roughly the same size as the product. Small products work with compact softboxes, while larger products need larger rectangular softboxes. Strip boxes are especially useful for narrow reflective edges on glass or metal.

How do Bi-Color and RGBWW LED lights differ?+

Bi-Color: adjustable color temperature from warm white to near daylight. This is useful when ambient light varies or skin tones need to stay consistent. RGBWW: white light plus colored light for accents, backgrounds and video effects.

What does a good first Walimex pro studio setup look like?+

For a first studio setup, kits with two light sources are practical because key and fill light can work together. The shop includes matching combinations of flash units, softboxes and stands. For later expansion, it is important that the trigger system and accessories remain compatible.
